The Need:
The boom in Information Technology created numerous opportunities for software engineers in the United States. The Pharmacy industry is following suit with the rapid growth in the use of prescription drugs. According to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), four out every five patients who visit a doctor in the United States leave with a prescription. The nation's prescription drug sales rose to about $182.7 billion last year from $152 billion in 2001, and are expected to rise a further 75 percent in the next five years.
Meanwhile, community pharmacy is facing a critical shortage of pharmacists -- a labor pool that has failed to grow while prescription use has soared. As of January 2000, chain pharmacies had more than 7,000 vacancies in their pharmacy departments. Every state but two now suffers a pharmacist shortage.

With new commitment and dedication, the chain pharmacy industry is coming together in an effort to address these challenges and improve public understanding of community pharmacy's critical role in patient health care.
The shortage, which has now surpassed 7,000 according to some industry experts, is equal to almost 7 percent of the 106,000 pharmacists employed at U.S. drug stores and the effects of the staffing shortage are being felt. It would allow them to keep pace with the rising demands of the pharmacy industry. With the surge in the amount of new drugs hitting the U.S. market it would be more feasible to employ labor from abroad rather than close shop.
